Pregnancy and Dieting
Pregnancy and dieting - all aspects of
both are very important and prior to any
dieting during pregnancy you must consult
your physician. Do not start a diet nor
take any diet related products without
this consultation.

When you are pregnant, you must, as
an expectant mother, concentrate on
gaining good nutrition for you and for
your baby, because the baby depends on you
to meet its nutritional requirements.
A pregnant woman like you need not
worry; an average diet, which includes the
required calorie intake from all the
recommended food groups, taken on a daily
basis, will be sufficient to help meet
your pregnancy nutritional requirements.
The intake of certain nutrients, however,
may have to be increased, for example,
iron, calcium and folate. You doctor will
advise you on this.
You must try to choose from a large
variety of foods everyday and make
concerted efforts to eat at least a small
portion of the following on a daily
basis:
- fruits
- vegetables
- cereals
- wholegrain breads
- low fat dairy foods
- lean meat
- chicken
- fish
- small amounts of foods that are
high in salt
- sugar
- fat
- plenty of nuts, dried beans,
lentils
- green leafy vegetables
- and low fat milk and yogurt
Remember, a pregnant woman like you is
advised never to diet so that you and your
baby remain healthy throughout your
pregnancy. Also remember that your baby
depends on you to obtain the best
nutrition possible, and it is therefore
your duty to obtain it for him or her. If
your baby does not get the very best
nutrition at this stage, then you run a
risk of the baby developing problems
related to under weight or malnutrition.
Furthermore, pregnancy tends to be more
complicated for under nourished women than
for healthy and well-nourished women.
